1950s

Jacqueline Waner Hunsicker ’51 Bus was honored in March on her 94th birthday with a Penn State tailgate party at her assisted living facility. The party included a visit from the Nittany Lion. She lives in Pocono Lake, Pa.

 

1960s

Gene P. Abel ’63 Bus, former COO of the Central Bucks School District, became a writer after retirement and has written 10 books. His most recent is Are They Out There? He hosts a podcast called Alien Agenda with Gene P. Abel. He lives in Sicklerville, N.J.

Tom Doorley ’67 Eng, ’67 Lib, has launched a new podcast series, Focus on Growth, available on all podcast platforms. He is chair and founder of Sage Partners, a strategy and governance advisory firm and his second entrepreneurial venture. Doorley also co-founded strategy consulting firm Braxton Associates. He lives in Cape Cod, Mass.

 

1970s

Nicholas Cirilli ’73 Eng is the owner of Yerkes Associates Inc. in West Chester, Pa., and Cirilli Associates Inc. in Springfield, Pa. Under his leadership, both companies have become top players in the fields of civil and structural engineering, engineering consulting, surveying, and more. This year, Yerkes is celebrating 150 years. Cirilli lives in Springfield, Pa.

Lisette M. McCormick ’76 H&HD received the Anne Alpern Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession. The award is presented annually to a female lawyer or judge who demonstrates excellence in the legal profession and who makes a significant professional impact on women in the law. Throughout her 40-year legal career, McCormick has focused on public interest law and advocated for justice and equal rights. She also served as the founding executive director of the Pennsylvania Interbranch Commission for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Fairness for 19 years. She lives in Pittsburgh.

Bill Zimpfer ’77 Lib, a prominent football play-by-play announcer, will receive the John Kunda Memorial Media Award. During his career, he worked as a play-by-play announcer for the Miami Dolphins for eight years. He also broadcast Penn State football games and served as a public address announcer for Nittany Lion basketball games. He lives in East Greenville, Pa.

 

1980s

Carol Hopkins Kennard ’80 H&HD was recently awarded the Harvey Woods Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. She retired after 41 years serving the Centerville-Washington Park District and Clark County Park District in southwest Ohio, and she lives in Centerville, Ohio.

Eugene Bauer ’81 Bus retired in December from the NASA Office of the Inspector General after 36-plus years of service with the federal government. He lives in Alvin, Texas.

Robert A. Krebs ’81 Lib, a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board, received the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Irvin Stander Award in recognition of his professionalism and contributions to the field of workers’ compensation law at the PBA annual Workers’ Compensation Law fall section meeting. Krebs was inducted into the Penn State chapter of the National Political Science Honor Society as its first alumni member, and he was also inducted as a fellow of the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Richard Carman ’82 H&HD retired as the morale, well-being, and recreation director at the United States Coast Guard Base Kodiak in Kodiak, Alaska. For over 29 years, he supported morale programs for the Coast Guard at both Base Cape Cod and Base Kodiak. He and his wife, Jody, live in Kodiak, Alaska.

David M Harris ’82 Eng (Blue Band), was recently recognized as an honorary life member by the Handbell Musicians of America. Harris directs the Raleigh Ringers, a renowned handbell group, and retired in 2022 after 40 years with IBM. He lives in Raleigh, N.C.

John M. Hartzell ’83 Bus was nominated to law firm Houston Harbaugh’s 2024 executive committee and will fulfill the role of treasurer. He practices estate planning and trust administration and chairs Houston Harbaugh’s estates and trust practice. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Susan Rickens ’83 Com retired as the director of marketing for Commonwealth Media Services after 31 years of service in state government. She is a former Emmy Award–winning broadcast and radio news producer/reporter. She served 10 years on the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications Alumni Board. She and her husband, Ron ’86 Com, live in Enola, Pa. Their children: Zachary ’15 Com; Amanda ’17 H&HD.

Practicing hand surgeon Dr. Steve Maser ’85 Sci (ΤΕΦ) was named vice president of Medical Affairs for Rapid City Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., in January 2023. The hospital is part of health care system Monument Health. Maser lives in Rapid City. His brother: David ’92 Bus; daughter: Alison ’17 Lib.

 

cover of What Did They Say? by Todd Sherman, courtesyTodd Sherman ’86 Com published his first book, What Did They Say?, a collection of quotes—and the stories behind them—catalogued over 23 years as an eighth grade language arts teacher. Sherman was a sportswriter and crime reporter for 11 years prior to becoming a middle school teacher.

 

Gregory Chesterton ’87 Eng (ΔΤΔ) recently joined the Institute of Defense Analyses as a research staff member in the operational evaluation division for IDA’s systems and analyses center. He lives in Reston, Va.

In June 2022, Dr. Karen Howard ’88 Edu, ’88 Sci was awarded the 2021 Arthur S. Flemming Award for outstanding federal service in Leadership and Management, one of only 12 recipients nationwide. She serves as the director of science and technology assessment and as acting chief scientist at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). She lives in Huntsville, Ala. Her brother: Ward Shaffer ’86 Eng.

Steve Schrader ’89 Lib and Deidre Schrader ’91 Edu started the charity A Bright Spot, sending cards to children in hospitals, seniors, refugees, military members, and others in need of support. They live in Bethesda, Md.

 

1990s

Dana Brownfield ’90 Eng received the NASA Exceptional Public Achievement Medal “for innovative process improvements resulting in sustained technical excellence and efficiencies for the COMPASS software development team.” The award recognized Brownfield for her work on the Artemis 1 mission in late 2022. She and her husband, George, live in Houston.

Scott Larimer ’90 Sci was awarded the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the third-highest honorary award in the Department of the Navy, granted for meritorious civilian service or a contribution that has resulted in high values and/or benefits to the Navy. Larimer is a lead systems engineer at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division and lives in Fredericksburg, Va.

Henryk Marcinkiewicz ’91 PhD Edu recently married Susan Staley. He worked in higher education and retired recently from the Aramco Americas Co. in Houston. Avid hikers, he and his wife volunteer to maintain hiking trails and live in Silverdale, Wash.

Greg Ruschau ’91 PhD Eng, a materials engineer with ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company, was selected as a Fellow of AMPP, the Association for Materials Protection and Performance. He lives in The Woodlands, Texas.

Jeffrey Sarabok ’91 H&HD was appointed to the Board of Trustees at Pittsburgh Technical College in 2022. His wife: Jennifer Sarabok ’90 Lib; son: Thomas Sarabok ’20 Lib, ’20 Bus.

Cheryl Trecoske-Fabrizi ’91 Com was named associate vice president of Auxiliary Services at Syracuse University in 2023. She previously served for five years as assistant vice president of housing and dining at Penn State. She and her family live in Syracuse, N.Y. Her siblings: Karen Trecoske-Wnuk ’92 Bus, Melissa Trecoske Houghton ’99 H&HD, Gregg ’98 Eng, and Jason ’02 Agr.

Paula Caligiuri ’92 MS Edu, ’95 PhD Lib was named 2023 Distinguished Alumni of the Year by Penn State’s department of psychology. Her most recent book on career planning for a happier life, Live for a Living, reached bestseller status on Amazon in several categories. She lives in Boston, Mass.

The Photo Thief, Jennifer Delozier ’92 Sci’s fifth novel, was published in October 2022. The Gothic murder mystery is about a grieving detective and a clairvoyant teen partnering to solve her mother’s murder—and a series of 80-year-old cold cases. Delozier and her husband, Rich ’90 H&HD, live in State College, Pa.

Stacey Rider ’92 Edu works as student affairs specialist in the library at the Community College of Beaver County. She also works with Phi Theta Kappa honors fraternity. She and her husband, Wade ’92 Lib, live in Beaver Falls, Pa. Her mother: Ladene A. Snyder ’85 Behrend.

Dan Leppold ’93, ’05 MS EMS published his first children’s book, The Adventures of Rey the Kitten, in February 2022. Based off the true adventures of his cat on his Berks County, Pa., farm, the book was published by Fulton Books and is available online at all major booksellers. His wife: Kim Harley Leppold ’93 Com, ’99 MS EMS; brother: Jerry ’85 Eng

Michael Tiliakos ’93 Lib was named general counsel of Argo Group International Holdings Inc. He lives in Manhasset, N.Y.

Hilda Bernel Cockram ’94 Lib and her husband, Ted Cockram, multi-unit franchisees of educational care center Kiddie Academy, received the 2022 President’s Circle Award during the most recent annual conference. They also opened their third Kiddie Academy location in January 2024 in Jacksonville, Fla. The couple lives in DeLand, Fla.

Jennifer Shuey ’94 A&A has been selected the winner of the 13th Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition with a painting titled Spring Creek at Fisherman’s Paradise. Shuey’s work is synonymous with the natural beauty of Happy Valley’s landscapes. She serves as director of development for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. She lives in Bellefonte, Pa.

Amanda Sutphin ’94 Lib co-wrote Buried Beneath the City: An Archaeological History of New York with Nan Rothschild, H. Arthur Bankoff, and Jessica Striebel MacLean. The book uses urban archaeology to retell the history of New York and draws upon the collections of the The Nan A. Rothschild Research Center. She lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Boniface Patrick Hicks ’97 PhD Eng celebrated 25 years of monastic vows and 20 years as a priest. A former adjunct assistant professor in Penn State’s computer science department and former campus minister at the Penn State Catholic Center, he is the author of five books and is presently director of the Institute for Ministry Formation at Saint Vincent Seminary. He lives in Latrobe, Pa.

Matthew Sekol ’98 Lib wrote ESG Mindset, which examines the nuances and complexities of environmental, social, and governance standards in investment portfolios. He works for Microsoft in the field of commercial sustainability and sits on the LP advisory committee of Morgan Stanley’s Next Level Fund. Sekol lives in Walnutport, Pa.

D-DAY RESPECTS: On the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, Jennifer Bennie ’99 Bus (ROTC), a former Navy helicopter pilot, paid her respects at the grave of Harry Edward Wagner ’41 Lib, who fought on Omaha Beach and for whom University Park’s Wagner Building is named. Bennie, who flew an SH-60B helicopter during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, will appear in the 2025 edition of the Pin-Ups for Vets calendar, which showcases female vets and raises money for VA Hospitals and veteran medical expenses. Courtesy.

 

Allison H. Fritts ’99 Bus was promoted to vice president of business development, oncology, at Johnson & Johnson. She lives in Philadelphia.

 

2000s

Armstrong Fluid Technology named Jacob Wolfe ’01 Bus regional manager, data center sales and business development, for the Americas. He is responsible for executing sales strategy and business development efforts to further Armstrong’s presence in the data center marketplace. He lives in Cypress, Texas.

Justin Miller ’02 Com celebrated 20 years with ESPN and the
Walt Disney Company. He is currently the executive director of college sports brand solutions for Disney Advertising. Last December, Justin and his wife, Anne, welcomed their second baby, Nora, who joins her older brother, Joseph. They live in West Hartford, Conn.

John F. McCaul ’11 Edu has been named a partner in law firm Hamburg, Rubin, Mullin, Maxwell & Lupin. He is an experienced criminal defense and personal injury attorney. He lives in Narberth, Pa.

Michael A. T. Zupan ’11 Lib embarked on a teaching career three years ago in Fairfax County, Va. He was named a 2023-2024 Outstanding Teacher at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School in Falls Church, Va. He lives in Burke, Va.

Khulud Khudur ’12 H&HD is the CEO and founder of Dr. Khulud Khudur LLC, a health services firm working with essential public health services to create comprehensive public health solutions. She has graduate degrees in public health and library and information science, and is working on her doctorate in public health with a focus on COVID-19. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Lauren Murphy ’14 Eng, a cinematographer and communications specialist, published her first book, The Craft of Scientific Films: How to Make Videos of Your Laboratory, Research, or Technical Projects. She lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Colleen Gannon ’16 Bus was named corporate controller at Precis Engineering + Architecture. She spent over 25 years in financial roles in the automotive industry before she joined Precis in 2022. she lives in Southampton, Pa.

Damon Markiewicz ’16 IST married Erin Rogers ’17 Com in September 2023. They live in Brooklyn, N.Y.
