When Barbara DeWitt Sunderlin joined the women’s lacrosse team as a junior in 1968, it was her first time picking up a stick. But, as she did in most sports, she adapted quickly. Sunderlin ’69 H&HD, who graduated 55 years ago this spring, is believed to be the first three-sport women’s varsity athlete in school history. She was the leading scorer for both the women’s basketball team—although statistics were not formally kept prior to 1974-75, she averaged more than 30 points per game—and the lacrosse team, and played field hockey in the fall. She cherishes both the memories she made as a student-athlete and the way that women’s sports grew at the university after she left. “When they came out with Title IX, I was really proud Penn State didn’t have to add anything for women at that time,” she says. “It’s amazing how they’ve progressed from the time I was there.”
