Kathy Hume loved the short time she spent earning her master’s degree at Penn State Great Valley in the ’90s, and that love has translated to more than 20 years of active involvement in the Alumni Association.

“Societies wear the graduation caps, and chapters wear the party hats,” says Hume ’96 MMgt IDF, who wears both as president of the Centre County Chapter and of the Graduate School Alumni Society. She began volunteering with the Penn State Great Valley Alumni Society, spending 13 years “in every role you can imagine,” she says, before she and her husband, Sam ’89 Bus, moved to State College to get more involved with the university. While she’s been at the helm of the Centre County chapter, active membership has grown from 240 to almost 600. “Being a volunteer is a team sport,” says Hume of being honored with the 2024 Kay and Ernie Salvino Volunteer of the Year Award. “You don’t do anything alone.”
