Rick Santorum Ends Another White House Run

CNN reported today that former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum ’80, ’86, who we profiled in our Nov./Dec. 2005 issue, has decided to end his most recent run at the presidency. This comes two days after Santorum polled at one percent during the Iowa Caucus, an event that he won when he ran back in 2012.

Santorum will officially announce that his campaign is suspended sometime tonight, likely during an appearance on Fox News at 7 p.m. It’s also expected that Santorum will throw his support behind a candidate at that time.

Rick Santorum, Surging Again

It was a perfect night for Rick Santorum.

The former Pennsylvania senator once again shook up the race for the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday, winning the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and the Missouri primary in a single night. With presumed frontrunner Mitt Romney still struggling to convince social conservatives to get behind him, the sweep by Santorum ’80, ’86g further muddied what many had seen as a clear-cut GOP nominating contest.

What Santorum’s victories mean for the long haul remains up for debate. Results in Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri are “non-binding,” so Santorum didn’t actually secure a single delegate. But those three wins give Santorum undeniable momentum for upcoming primaries, and also bode ill for Romney even if he ultimately secures the nomination.

For his part, Santorum insists he’s thinking bigger than his party’s nomination. “I don’t stand here to claim to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney,” he said Tuesday night. “I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama.”

On Rick Santorum’s Surge

In a GOP presidential race that has seen a number of front-runners, Rick Santorum ’80, ’86g was starting to look like the only well-known candidate who might not get his turn in the spotlight. With the Iowa caucus less than a week away, Santorum — who has put substantial resources into campaigning in the Hawkeye state — has finally seen his poll numbers rise to the point that folks are paying attention. Among the coverage Santorum is generating this week are pieces in England’s Guardian newspaper, Slate, and this interview Wednesday evening with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

The way things have gone, we’d no sooner attempt to predict where Santorum or any other GOP candidate will stand this time next week than we would predict the name of Penn State’s next football coach. But today, at least, Santorum is in the mix.

Rick Santorum is Getting Ready to Race

It’s not quite official, but Rick Santorum ’80, ’86g just took one big step closer to being a 2012 GOP presidential candidate. The former Pennsylvania senator and outspoken social conservative on Wednesday announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee; it doesn’t mean he’s in the race, but it confirms he’s seriously considering throwing his hat into what figures to be a crowded ring of Republican contenders. We’ll be watching to see if (when?) he jumps all the way in.

More on Rick Santorum’s Political Plans

Senior editor Ryan Jones mentioned yesterday that Rick Santorum ’80, ’86g is popping up in the news more and more lately as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. Today’s Washington Post contains yet another story on the subject. Columnist Kathleen Parker profiles Santorum, quoting him as saying, “I have no great burning desire to be president, but I have a burning desire to have a different president of the United States.”

Rick Santorum ‘Absolutely’ Considering Presidential Run

When I posted a quick blog on this topic a few months ago, I ended with the following: “I imagine this won’t be the last we hear of it.”

Ok, so it wasn’t much of a limb to go out on.

Still, worth noting that in an interview this morning on ABCNews.com, Rick Santorum ’80, ’86g said he’s “absolutely taking a look” at running for the Republican presidential nomination. It’s early, but it seems more and more likely that we’ll have a polarizing Penn Stater in the mix in 2012.
