Aurelia Meijer Is a Breath of Fresh Air for Penn State Field Hockey

When Aurelia Meijer came to Penn State in the fall of 2015, it wasn’t just her first time on a college campus. It was her first time ever stepping foot in the United States.

Meijer, a standout midfielder/forward on the Nittany Lion field hockey team, holds the distinction of being the first foreign-born player in program history. Born in South Africa, Meijer has lived in the Netherlands since she was 4.

It was not long after that Meijer started playing field hockey. She picked up the game after watching her father play in the country’s highest men’s league and her grandfather play for the national team in the Netherlands. The Meijers even have a turf next to their house in the Dutch municipality of Hattem, where you can watch the family play and work on their skills.

Basically, field hockey—in addition to being part of the cultural identity of the Netherlands—has been a constant presence in Meijer’s life from the time she was a child.

So it only makes sense that Meijer is really good at the sport. When she was 15, (more…)

Penn State field hockey won the Big Ten Tournament over the weekend, marking the first time since 2012 that the Nittany Lions have won the tournament and earned an automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Head coach Charlene Morett-Curtis ’79 led her squad to victory over Maryland in the championship game, 2-1, thanks to goals from Aurelia Meijer and Gini Bramley.

This win was significant for more than one reason: It marked the 500th win in Morett-Curtis’ time at the helm of Penn State’s field hockey program, making her the third coach in school history to win at least 500 games along with women’s volleyball coach Russ Rose (1,207) and men’s volleyball coach Mark Pavlik (522).

The Lions will kick off NCAA Tournament play on Nov. 12, taking on Princeton at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex at 11:30 a.m. The two teams played earlier this season and the Nittany Lions came out on top, 4-2.

Penn State Field Hockey Player Aurelia Meijer Gave the Best Interview Ever

Watching the joy in an athlete’s face after a big win is one of the best things about sports. This was on display last week after Penn State’s field hockey team took down Iowa, 3-2. All three goals were scored by freshman midfielder/forward Aurelia Meijer, including the game-winner as time expired.

Afterward, Meijer – a native of South Africa and the first international player in program history – did an interview with the Big Ten Network. Meijer had a smile on her face as she broke down each of her three goals in detail. She also talked about her brief time at Penn State, which led to the BTN announcer calling her “a breath of fresh air.”
