Exciting times for journalist Jason Cherkis

headshotThe new year is shaping up as a busy and rewarding one for my old Daily Collegian colleague Jason Cherkis ’95. A national investigative reporter at The Huffington Post, Cherkis last week was nominated for an Ellie Award by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) for “Dying to be Free,” his long-form investigative piece on an underused treatment for heroin addiction. Last week also saw the debut of Candidate Confessional, a political podcast on which Cherkis is co-host. The premise is unique: Guests are former candidates who have lost high-profile races, and the goal is to talk honestly about what it’s like to go through that campaign grind, only to come up short. It’s also unusual in that it seems truly non-partisan: The first two guests, both former presidential candidates, are populist Democrat Howard Dean and Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann. For political junkies, it’s very much worth a listen.
