GO FOR A DRIVE
Disc golf is a fun and accessible summer activity, but there’s more to playing it than grabbing the Frisbee in your garage. Jake Fenimore ’24 Eng, president of Penn State’s Disc Golf Club, breaks down three ways to grip the disc you’ll need to attack the course.
BACKHAND GRIP
Put four fingers on the inside rim of the disc (above). This grip, also called a power grip, is ideal for distance throws with lighter, winged discs called drivers.
FAN GRIP

This is similar to a power grip, but the middle and ring fingers are fanned out while the pinky and pointer fingers are curled in. This helps increase accuracy and trajectory on midrange throws.
FOREHAND GRIP

Allow the middle finger to lie across the inside of the rim, and grip it between the pointer and middle fingers and your thumb. This grip is ideal for short throws with the putter disc.
BONUS TIP
Fenimore recommends filming your throws with your phone, then finding videos of more advanced disc golfers on YouTube and comparing their technique to yours.
