BOARD GAME
Success in bowling is all about hitting your spot, and knowing how to aim for that spot is a big part of it. Brady Knox, president of the Penn State Berks Club Bowling team, provides some tips that will help recreational and skilled bowlers with their alignment.
GET THE POINT
Position your feet according to which type of ball you throw. Knox, a right-hander who curves the ball from right to left, stands with his left foot two boards (the markings on the lane) to the left of the middle board (Board 22), and right behind the second set of dots. Those who opt to roll a straight ball should stand closer to the center board (Board 20).
EYES OFF THE PRIZE
Knox says, “You don’t want to look at the pins. You look at one of the arrows on the lane.” In his case, that arrow (Board 10) is the second to the right from the middle, but a straight-ball thrower might consider aiming between the two arrows to the right of center; hitting the head pin straight-on is not ideal for throwing strikes.
WATCH YOUR STEP
Knox takes four strides of equal length—beginning with his right foot—and times his throw so that the ball is in his release position on the fourth step. More steps might work for you, he says, but keep the number and tempo consistent.
BONUS TIP: When selecting your ball, Knox says, “The hole size should have a snug fit. You don’t want your thumb to be too loose, because you will drop the ball, and too tight will make the ball soar. You want some friction, but an easy release.”
