In 1921, the eight Black male students at University Park formed the Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, the first Black organization on campus. The fraternity’s four ideals—manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift—have been demonstrated through its signature activities on campus, including the Miss Black Penn State pageant; Local Talent Hunt; the Charles Drew blood drive; and Achievement Week, which recognizes individuals who’ve uplifted the community.
In 2006, the Nu Alumni Association was founded to serve as the official body of the chapter’s alums. In celebration of the chapter’s centennial this year, the Nu Alumni Association raised $140,000 to establish the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Nu Alumni Educational Equity Scholarship, to be awarded to undergraduates who meet the program criteria. —RP
