Nittany Lion Spotlight: Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton

The senior running backs are gearing up for one more shot at a national title.

Q: How have you made each other better?

NICK SINGLETON: On the field, working together, pushing each other every time, whether it’s lifting, working out, doing extra work outside of football. Just being there for each other and checking up on each other. Whenever he’s in the game, I’m seeing the different looks on defense and telling him, “Watch this,” when he comes to the sideline, and vice versa. It’s just been really good.

KAYTRON ALLEN: We’re always pushing one another to be great, always helping each other out on certain things, not even football, just life. That’s my dog.

Q: Why did you come back for your senior year?

ALLEN: I feel like we’ve got unfinished business, like we should have gone to the national championship and won the national championship. I feel like that was my goal before I came here. When I committed, I said I wanted to win a national championship. That’s the biggest thing. Get it done for Coach Franklin.

SINGLETON: Just how last season ended. I’ve always wanted to go out on a national championship, and all the seniors, we made a little group chat where we decided what we wanted to do. We wanted to win a national championship. It was a decision me and my family made, too, and it ended up leading me back here.

Q: Nick is on the cover of (EA Sports) College Football 26. Who on the team is the best at that game?

SINGLETON: Either Fatman (Allen), Corey (Smith), or … I’m trying to think … those two are on the top of my head.

ALLEN: I’d say me (laughs).

Q: How has Andy Kotelnicki’s offense given you opportunities as running backs?

ALLEN: We get to do certain things that we weren’t used to before he got here, like spread around in different personnel packages. It shows our versatility, not just taking the handoff out of the backfield.

SINGLETON: Coach K’s offense is really good. You could see that last year with the success we had. A lot of formations, a lot of looks for the defense. Then we have good players on offense. Anyone can get the ball.

Q: Who were some of your favorite running backs to watch when you were a kid?

SINGLETON: At Penn State, I’d say Saquon. The plays he made in big games. Journey Brown, too, Miles Sanders. In the NFL, I like how Derrick Henry plays the game. Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara.

ALLEN: Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell, Josh Jacobs. And Saquon. There’s a lot. Ray Rice. I try to steal a couple things from everybody.

Q: What are three things that are always in your fridge?

ALLEN: Water. Milk. What else? Cheese.

SINGLETON: Hot sauce, definitely. Some type of chicken, and some Kool-Aid. Water, too.

Q: Favorite TV show?

SINGLETON: Snowfall, The Wire, Power, BMF

ALLEN: Power. When I was young, I’d say Spongebob

Q: Favorite sport to watch that isn’t football?

ALLEN: Basketball, for sure. Loved the Lakers and Kobe.

SINGLETON: Probably the NBA. I’m a Sixer fan, but when they get to the playoffs, I watch everybody.

Q: What will you miss the most about Penn State?

SINGLETON: The brotherhood. Every year the team is different. Seeing guys go out into the league or whatever they’re doing with their life. It’s that brotherhood. Once you leave here, you don’t get that experience. Every coach says it. That’s probably what I’ll miss most.

ALLEN: The guys on the team. You go to work with them every day. We’re always pushing each other to uphold the standard. They’re like my brothers.
