I spent four years on first floor McKean Hall, aka Butler House. While the 1973 Nittany Lions and Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti ’74 H&HD were on their way to an undefeated season, the Butler House IM team’s inauspicious winless season garnered an invitation to play Ogontz House in the 1973 Toilet Bowl!

Ogontz House perfected a “spread offense” en route to an undefeated season and the Dormitory Division IM championship. That’s when our RAs conjured the idea of a best-vs.-worst matchup. The stage was set, and the 1973 Toilet Bowl was played on Saturday, Dec. 8. Needless to say, Ogontz was the winner. Contrary to a notice in The Daily Collegian that the winner would receive a “brand new, shiny toilet seat,” I somehow ended up with it and have held on to it for the past 52 years.

Butler House made the IM football playoffs for each of the ensuing years after having implemented the spread offense. That annual success was capped off in 1978 by winning the Dormitory Division IM Football Championship!

Butler House became a fraternity of close friends; intramural accomplishments aside, our greatest success occurred in 2012 with the establishment of the Butler House Trustee Scholarship. Former residents, or Butlerite wannabes, can donate at giveto.psu.edu/butlerhousescholarship.
