Dedicated Teacher

Anne Frost built her 36-year teaching career on fairness and respect, qualities she demanded of her students and her school community. Early in her tenure in Baltimore, Frost ’62, ’66 MEd H&HD started a women’s gymnastics team, taking on “constant battles” with the basketball coach for gym space, says Robert ’62 Eng, her husband of 63 years. “In the early ’60s, there were two teams: football and basketball,” he says. “The school would not buy the equipment she needed, so she got the community to donate it.”

A West Virginia native, Anne spent two years at West Virginia University before marrying Robert and transferring to Penn State, alma mater of her mother, Edna Bittner Daugherty 1919 H&HD. Anne’s father had died when she was in high school, so when Daugherty moved to State College, the young couple followed. Robert says her first love was math—which she taught for most of her career. As a teacher, the avid reader continued a beloved tradition set by her own high school math teacher: writing a thought- provoking quote on the chalkboard at the beginning of each class. “It got the students’ attention,” he says. “They looked forward to that quote.”

Anne was also a devoted mother, cheerleading coach, gardener, water-skier, tennis player, and Penn State fan. The couple was active in local chapters of the Alumni Association wherever they lived and named their dogs Joe Paw and Nittany Bear. “She dearly loved Penn State,” Robert says.

Anne died May 7, 2023, in Ponce Inlet, Fla. Besides Robert, she is survived by daughters Lisa Mekos and Kim Fine, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. —RR
