At age 8, Theron “Terry” A. Schnure ’63 Eng would ride his bike to a nearby grass airstrip to watch the planes and try to talk with pilots in his hometown of Lewisburg, Pa. After he received his undergraduate degree, Schnure’s steady demeanor and loyalty to a cause served him well, first as an air intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy serving on aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War, and later during a 49-year career as a Connecticut state criminal justice planner, where he was committed to getting local and state law enforcement to work together.
He earned his pilot’s license and, after moving to the Hartford, Conn., area, became an avid member of the Connecticut Valley Flyers Club, of which he served as president for many years. He relished taking friends on the four-seater club Cessna 172 to most of Penn State’s home football games each season. “He loved all things Pennsylvania,” says his wife, Andrea. “He never really left.”
He and Andrea, married for 45 years with three sons, met at an area singles group. Schnure was president of the Connecticut Valley Chapter of the Alumni Association and helped organize many chapter events over the past 50 years, says friend Dean Delach ’76 Sci. “He also loved being an Alumni Admissions volunteer and recruited many students for Penn State.”
A three-time cancer survivor, Schnure became a dedicated member of the Hartford Hospital Cancer Support Group. He sang in church choirs and served in lengthy volunteer leadership roles at his church.
Schnure (ΘΔΧ, Choir), 82, died July 7, 2024, at his home in Windsor, Conn. Besides his wife and sons, survivors include his sister and two grandchildren. —Meri-Jo Borzilleri
