Answers to Questions

1. In view of sharply declining state appropriations, what steps should Penn State be taking to secure its financial future?

The University should put on hold any new buildings, construction projects and land acquisitions, and focus on increasing its endowment to allow that savings to be used to offset the reduction in appropriations received from the state.   The fund raising campaign currently in place “For the Future” will go a long way to help secure the University’s Future.

2. The rising cost of tuition nationally is making college less affordable for many students. Outline the steps you believe Penn State should be taking to address the issue.

Implement a two year degree program for those students that can’t afford to attend for (4) years.  Reduce the budget in areas that do not affect the quality of education such as energy cost for  Heating and cooling of the buildings.  Implement a study to determine what areas of the budget can be reduced without diminishing the quality of education currently being provided.

3. What form should Penn State’s land-grant mission take in the 21st century?

Hire a top notch PR firm to assist with all media and announcements prior to release to the public or student body to preserve integrity and maintian honor. Provide the highest quality of education at a cost that does not continue to increase year after year.
