‘Avenue Q’ Coming to Penn State

bannerL-aveq1I was happy to see an announcement that the Broadway musical Avenue Q is coming to Penn State early next month. A Penn State grad, Rick Lyon ’85, created the puppets for that show—we profiled him a while back, in our Jan-Feb 2004 issue, which was right around the time Avenue Q was making its Broadway debut. The show went on to win three Tony Awards.

Lyon, in addition to being the guy behind all the puppets, plays several of the characters in the Broadway version. I’m not clear on whether he’ll be part of the production here at his alma mater, though.

Avenue Q has “mature themes” and probably isn’t the sort of show you’d take your little kids to. You can read more about the storyline on the show’s Web site and at Wikipedia.

Rick Lyon won’t be on the tour coming to Penn State, but the puppets he designed will be here. You can hear my interview with Jeff Whitty, who won the Tony for Best Book of a Musical for his work on Avenue Q, at http://www.cpa.psu.edu/events/aveq.html.
