Penn State announced this afternoon that its longtime VP for research, Eva Pell, will be leaving in January to become undersecretary for science at the Smithsonian Institution.
Pell, whose title at the University is senior vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School, has been at Penn State for practically her entire career, starting as an assistant professor in plant pathology back in 1973.
In her new gig at the Smithsonian, she’ll oversee more than 1,000 researchers in such places as the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Zoo, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Massachusetts, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, among others.

Congratulations to Dr. Pell! I first met her while photographing an assignment on her ozone and air rain studies on plants back in the 1980s out at Rock Springs. The research at the Smithsonian will be in good hands.
