Penn State’s Fall Sports Kick Off Tonight
Classes don’t start until Monday, but the Nittany Lions’ fall sports season gets underway tonight when the women’s soccer team — going for its 12th straight Big Ten title — hosts Virginia at Jeffrey Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The team is aiming to set a Jeffrey Field attendance record, and there’s plenty to attract even casual soccer fans out to the pitch. Penn State, which returns nine starters from last year’s squad, is ranked 6th in the preseason rankings by Soccer America, and 12th in the NSCAA preseason poll. UVA is ranked 11th and 9th in the same surveys. Point being, it should be a great early matchup between two of the best teams in the country. If this recent run of thunderstorms gives us a break tonight, I’ll be there.

Pentathletes, Soccer Bloggers, and High-Stakes Hoops
A few things as we get ready to pack it in for the weekend:
-Gayle Hunter ’08 (still a senior for athletic purposes) set a new school record in the pentathlon and finished second in the nation this afternoon at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in College Station, Tex. She was in fourth place going into the final event, the 800 meters, where she set a personal record to vault into second place. The meet continues through the weekend; you can check here to keep tabs on how the Lady Lions fare.
-Women’s soccer assistant coach Ann Cook and senior midfielder Allie Daus are blogging from Nicaragua, where they’re taking part in a very cool outreach program called Soccer Without Borders. Allie went to the trouble of posting a pretty informative blog yesterday, and it’s well worth checking out.
-Tonight at 9 pm Eastern, the men’s basketball team plays Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Simply put, it’s a game that might very well determine whether Penn State makes this year’s NCAA Tournament. If you’ve got access to the Big Ten Network, I expect you’ll be watching. I know I will.
Enjoy the weekend.
