A Showcase of Grad Students in Music and Theatre

I went to the State Theatre on Friday night to see 14 Penn State grad students—all of them studying either music or theatre—give short performances as part of Penn State’s 25th annual Graduate Exhibition.

We’re tentatively planning to carry a story about the Grad Exhibition as the lead story in the Pulse section of our May-June issue (I say “tentatively” only because, until that magazine goes to the printer, you just never know), and since I enjoy doing concert photography, I volunteered to take photos Friday night for use with our story.

The shot at left (click on it to see it bigger) is of David Smith, a master’s student in trumpet performance who is studying under Penn State professor of trumpet Langston Fitzgerald III. On Friday night he performed a Baroque piece called The Tartini Trumpet Concerto and took second place in the competition. He also was a crowd favorite, judging from the cheering that followed his performance.

You can see a slide show of 10 photos I took Friday night at Penn State Live.

P.S. We’ve got a Facebook page now! Be sure to check it out.
