Ty Burrell Shows Some Love For His Alma Mater
Modern Family had its predictably hilarious season premiere on Wednesday night, and our man Ty Burrell ’97g was his usual loopy self. Line of the night (at least for Nittany Lion fans) came when Burrell’s character, Phil Dunphy, was telling his son about having attended a long-ago Rose Bowl game. He doesn’t mention the year, but when his son asks what happened, Phil replies, ”We got our butts kicked by Penn State.”
Burrell was born and raised in Oregon, so we can only assume this is a sly reference to the 1995 Rose Bowl, in which the Lions knocked off the Oregon Ducks, 38-20.
You can watch the entire episode on the ABC website. The Rose Bowl reference comes about 3:45 into the show.

Ty Burrell & Keegan-Michael Key Go Prime Time
Probably the best-reviewed show of the new fall TV season is Modern Family, an irreverent new sitcom shot in “mockumentary” style, which premieres tonight on ABC. (Some critics are saying it reminds them of Arrested Development, which should be all you need to know). One of Modern Family’s stars is Ty Burrell ’97 (pictured) and he’s apparently one of the reasons the show is so promising: The L.A. Times calls him “hilarious,” and The New York Times says he’s “fantastic.”
Ty’s not the only Penn Stater making a debut of sorts tonight: Keegan-Michael Key ’96, formerly of MADtv, is a new cast member on the second season of the CBS sitcom Gary Unmarried.

Prime-Time Revenge
The early pick for best atmosphere of the 2009 Penn State football season? Easy: The Sept. 26 home date with Iowa, which has just been announced as an 8 p.m. kickoff on either ABC or ESPN. Expect an overflow (and very noisy) crowd for what is sure to be the season’s first (and perhaps only) all-stadium “White Out.”
And don’t expect anyone in the crowd to have forgotten this.
