Sandusky Trial Begins

The final appeal—to the Pennsylvania state supreme court—was denied Monday afternoon, so the trial of Jerry Sandusky ’66, ’71g on 52 counts of child sexual abuse will begin Tuesday morning with jury selection. Media trucks were already in position outside the courthouse in Bellefonte on Monday afternoon, as seen by this photo by Michael Dawson ’02, who’s covering the trial for the Centre Daily Times.
Much of the coverage leading up to jury selection has rehashed the circumstances that led to it; you can read a particularly comprehensive report by the Patriot-News in Harrisburg here, and watch a two-minute “catch-up” video by Pulitzer Prize winner Sara Ganim ’08 here.
Judge John Cleland has ruled that reporters in the courtroom (and in the annex; there’s not enough room for all of the media in the courtroom) cannot tweet or otherwise communicate electronically while court is in session, so it’ll be impossible to follow along in real time. But expect regular updates from outlets such as The Daily Collegian, Onward State, the CDT, StateCollege.com, the Patriot, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The (Allentown) Morning Call, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Those news organizations have been covering the scandal on the ground since it happened, and they’re our go-to sources for the latest.
