On Rick Santorum’s Surge

In a GOP presidential race that has seen a number of front-runners, Rick Santorum ’80, ’86g was starting to look like the only well-known candidate who might not get his turn in the spotlight. With the Iowa caucus less than a week away, Santorum — who has put substantial resources into campaigning in the Hawkeye state — has finally seen his poll numbers rise to the point that folks are paying attention. Among the coverage Santorum is generating this week are pieces in England’s Guardian newspaper, Slate, and this interview Wednesday evening with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The way things have gone, we’d no sooner attempt to predict where Santorum or any other GOP candidate will stand this time next week than we would predict the name of Penn State’s next football coach. But today, at least, Santorum is in the mix.
