Through the Years With The Penn Stater

As you’ve likely gathered from our past couple of posts, we’re celebrating a milestone with this issue. The Penn State Alumni Quarterly—which evolved into The Penn Stater—made its debut in November 1910, making our November/December issue our 100th anniversary. (If you haven’t already received it, it should be in your mailbox shortly.)

There’s a lot of Penn State history in this issue—as seen by generations of our editors and writers. We paged through 100 years of magazines, and it turns out we covered everything from the administration’s 1914 effort to keep students from adding an extra day or two to the Christmas and Easter holiday breaks (if a student didn’t have an excuse “acceptable to deans and advisers,” he would “thereby forfeit his registration”) to the Blue Band’s runway appearance at a Marc Jacobs fashion show in 2006 (drum major Kevin Rudy ’06 realized it was a big deal when he saw P. Diddy looking on).

You’ll find a decade-by-decade look at the highlights from the magazine (including more on the nuggets above), a package with our most compelling covers, and the story of how two centenarian alumni, Jacob Cohen ’31 and Audrey Moore ’35, met and fell in love at Penn State.

We’re hoping our look back will remind you of your favorite moments at Penn State—and your favorite issues of The Penn Stater. And we’d love it if you’d share your memories in the comments below.

Tina, Lori and the rest of the Penn Stater staff,

Excellent story on “Lincoln Hall” and Perry Smith’s visit back to the once segragated boarding home. My wife and I really enjoyed meeting Mr. Smith at the Black Alumni Reunion in September. His story was truly inspirational.

Congratulations on your 100th Anniversary! I also learned a number of new things about Penn State history from just scanning the November/December 2010 edition. I’m glad the Penn Stater was there to capture these moments.
