Longtime Lax Coach Glenn Thiel Retires

Penn State men’s lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel ’66, leader of the Nittany Lion program for 33 years, has announced his retirement.

His tenure couldn’t quite match that of Joe Paterno, but Thiel’s Penn State roots run even deeper than Joe’s: Glenn’s father, Nick Thiel ’38 MEd, was the Penn State lax coach from 1935-66 (you can read a feature about the Thiels’ legacy here). The younger Thiel starred as a player for the Nittany Lions and followed his dad’s footsteps into coaching, leading the University of Virginia to an NCAA championship in 1972. Glenn took the head job at his alma mater in 1977, and while his Nittany Lions never won a national title, the program has enjoyed great success during his tenure, posting a 313-222 record and earning a pair of NCAA tournament berths.

Thiel’s retirement will take effect at the end of June. A national search for his replacement is underway.
