Meet Penn State’s National Champion… Boom Runner?

No, I’d never heard of boom running either—until yesterday, when news of Alyse Schroeder’s national championship performance at the 2009 Stihl Timbersports Series came across our desks. As you’ll see in the video linked here (unfortunately I can’t embed it), boom running is a sprint run over a length of floating logs — pretty intense, and with more than a little potential for serious pain if you lose your footing. And thanks to her upset victory last week, Schroeder, a Penn State junior, is the best female boom runner in the country.
Schroeder will be back in action later this month at the 50th annual Lumberjack World Championships, which happen to be held in her hometown of Hayward, Wisc. Hopefully, you’ll also have a chance to read more about her soon in The Penn Stater.
