Keeping Track

It’s been a busy few days for current and former Nittany Lion track standouts. Over the weekend, Penn State hosted the Big Ten men’s indoor championships and finished third, the guys’ best-ever showing. The women did one better, finishing second to Minnesota at the Big Ten women’s indoor meet in Bloomington, Ind.
The stakes were even higher in Boston, where former Penn Staters competed in the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Shakeema Walker Welsch ’99 starred in Beantown, winning a national title in the triple-jump and finishing seventh in the long jump, while Shana Cox ’07 ran third in the 400 meters and Lena Bettis ’08 finished eighth in the triple jump.
Two others with Penn State ties fared well: Gigi Johnson, wife of Nittany Lion associate head coach Chris Johnson, ran fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, and current grad student Rebecca Donaghue was fifth in the 3000 meters (you can follow Rebecca on her blog, runningrebecca.com).
