A Penn State Expert on the Presidency

Several of us on the magazine staff have Google Alerts as a way of constantly trolling for story ideas. Basically you go to Google and type in a list of names and phrases—”Penn State,” “Pennsylvania State University,” “John Cappelletti,” “Jonathan Frakes,” “Steve McCurry,” and so on—and Google will send you an e-mail every time that name or phrase appears in the news.

I have way, way, way too many Google Alerts, and I don’t keep up with them very well. But I happened to glance in my Google Alerts mailbox this afternoon and noticed that Penn State alumna and presidential historian Meena Bose has a new book out. We profiled Dr. Bose a few years ago, when she was teaching at West Point, and I’ve tried to keep tabs on her since then via a Google Alert. Her new book is called The New York Times on the Presidency: 1853-2008 and it’s published by Congressional Quarterly Press. Apparently it’s sort of a combination of historical analysis and news coverage of 28 presidents, from Franklin Pierce to George W. Bush.
We’re too far along with the January-February issue to do anything with the book in that issue (heck, the magazine is supposed to go to the printer on Monday—but whether we actually make the deadline is another story). But who knows, maybe we’ll do something on it in our March-April issue. Or not. We get so many story ideas that it’s impossible to predict which ones will pan out. But I thought you might be interested in knowing about the book. A possible gift for the U.S. history wonk on your holiday shopping list, perhaps!
